The importance of training and developing a skilled workforce

We recognise the importance of training and developing a skilled workforce for the future and believe that by investing in apprentices we will continue to be recognised as a company that provides work of the highest quality. We are actively involved in the development and promotion of traditional crafts to ensure that we have a skilled workforce for the next generation.

 

PAYE Apprenticeships are ideal for those looking to gain on the job experience and our Craft Apprentices are given the opportunity to develop their stonemasonry skills by working on some of the most prestigious buildings and monuments in the UK

 

Over the past ten years we have trained over forty cleaners, restorers, and stonemasons to achieve a minimum standard of NVQ level 2 through the OSAT NVQ Scheme. We also employ apprentices who study part time to NVQ level 3.

An example of duties

Listed below is an example of the duties that a Stonemason / Bricklaying Apprentice will assist with and the skills required:

  • The restoration of prestigious historic buildings and landmarks in and around London and the South East
  • Restoring buildings and monuments to their original condition
  • Assisting with the carving or repairing of statues and memorials
  • Making and installing stonework window jambs and mullions, archways and ornamental features
  • Skills learnt will be used to replace / repair broken or missing masonry units in Listed buildings / facades
  • To assist with the bricklaying and concrete foundation work
  • To comply with the Quality Assurance procedures
  • Maintaining Health & Safety standards
  • Assisting with the organisation of materials, plant and resources

Training

All Apprentices receive structured training; CSCS, Asbestos Awareness and Manual Handling as a minimum.

 

There are regular contracts meetings and in-house training sessions that staff attend to get a better under-standing of PAYE and to share knowledge and best practices.
